What's in the Bible Disc 2 Episode 2

What’s in the bible disc 2 episode 2 Devo

What is the most important commandment that God gave his people in Exodus?

Exodus 20Common English Bible (CEB)
20 Then God spoke all these words:
I am the Lord your God who brought you out of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
You must have no other gods before[a] me.
Do not make an idol for yourself—no form whatsoever—of anything in the sky above or on the earth below or in the waters under the earth. Do not bow down to them or worship them, because I, the Lord your God, am a passionate God.

When God gave his people this command it was because all of the other people around the Hebrews would worship made up gods that were in the form of statures called idols.  Often times the people thought that these made up gods wanted them to do cruel things, like hurt themselves or sacrifice babies.  God did not want people to follow these made up gods, and so he wanted the Hebrew people to show the world what it looks like when someone follows the one true God.

Today we probably don’t know anyone who follows those old made up gods, but sometimes we can be tempted to put other things before God.

What are some things that people might put before God?
Money?  Activities?  Good Grades?  A boyfriend or girlfriend?  Yourself?

Everyone has a thing that we are tempted to put before God.  Even though we are not literally bowing down to made up gods like some people did in the book of Exodus, we break the first commandment when we put anything before God.

How can we put God first?  By living a life where we do our best to follow the teachings of Jesus.

Grab a bible and read Matthew 5:1-16 together.  What do you learn about putting God first?

What’s in the Bible disc 2 part 1 Devo

What’s in the Bible disc 2 part 1 Devo

In Genesis 17 God makes a promise to Abraham that he will give him a big family and that his family will bless the whole world.

God keeps his promise and Abraham’s family become God’s people.  Eventually one of Abraham’s descendants, a girl named Mary, gives birth to Jesus!

Do you think God made you a promise?

John 14:1-4Common English Bible (CEB)
The way, the truth, and the life
14 “Don’t be troubled. Trust in God. Trust also in me. My Father’s house has room to spare. If that weren’t the case, would I have told you that I’m going to prepare a place for you? When I go to prepare a place for you, I will return and take you to be with me so that where I am you will be too. You know the way to the place I’m going.”

Jesus promises us salvation from sin, and a place in God’s kingdom.  A cool thing about that promise is that we don’t have to sit and wait for a trip to heaven, we can be part of God’s kingdom right now when we love our neighbor, do our best to follow God, and invite other people to be part of God’s kingdom.

What's in the Bible Disc 1 Part 2 Devo

What’s in the bible disc 1 part 2 Devo

In disc 1 part 2 of What’s in the Bible, we learned that God made the universe, and that it is good, but that people decided to go against God’s plan and go their own way, which is sin.

What are some examples of sin?

Does God like sin?

Do all people sin?

A really smart Christian named Paul writes about sin in the book of Romans.
Romans 3:21-26Common English Bible (CEB)
God’s righteousness through faithfulness of Christ
21 But now God’s righteousness has been revealed apart from the Law, which is confirmed by the Law and the Prophets. 22 God’s righteousness comes through the faithfulness of Jesus Christ for all who have faith in him. There’s no distinction. 23 All have sinned and fall short of God’s glory, 24 but all are treated as righteous freely by his grace because of a ransom that was paid by Christ Jesus. 25 Through his faithfulness, God displayed Jesus as the place of sacrifice where mercy is found by means of his blood. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness in passing over sins that happened before, 26 during the time of God’s patient tolerance. He also did this to demonstrate that he is righteous in the present time, and to treat the one who has faith in Jesus as righteous.

Who does Paul say has sinned?

Even though we have sinned we are treated as righteous.  Why?

Do we save ourselves from sin?  Who saves us?

Do you think that God must love us a lot to forgive our sins?
